Florida sophomore right-side/setter Kelly Murphy registered a match-high 15 kills on .542 hitting with 16 assists and seven digs to lead the Gator volleyball team to a 3-0 decision against Georgia on Sunday.
Murphy finished the weekend with 26 total kills for an average of 4.33 kills per set on .600 hitting over the two-match stretch. She also averaged 5.83 assists per set, 3.17 digs per set and 1.00 blocks per set.
“We played this entire match at the right intensity level and the right effort level,” Florida head coach Mary Wise said. “I thought both our offense and our defense played at a pretty high level tonight.”
Florida (14-3, 8-2 SEC) hit .368 in the match, holding The Bulldogs to an .087 hitting efficiency.
“Good things happen when we block balls,” Wise said. “We’ve worked so hard all season long on blocking and our players have really bought into that.”
Sophomore outside hitter Kristy Jaeckel tallied nine kills on .421 hitting with six digs and two blocks for 10.5 total points. Senior middle blocker Kristina Johnson recorded a match-high six blocks, while junior right-side Callie Rivers turned in a career-high five blocks.
Georgia (11-9, 2-7 SEC) was led by nine kills each from Bahr and Erika Clarke.
Florida returns to action on Friday when it returns home to face Arkansas at7 p.m. and the match will be carried live on Sun Sports.
Soccer: A header goal by sophomore Tahnai Annis was all the No. 11 Florida soccer team (11-4-2, 5-1-2 SEC) would need Sunday. The Gators defeated No. 23 Georgia (12-3-1, 5-3 SEC) 1-0 Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 2,023.
The only goal of the match came when Annis headed in Lindsay Thompson’s cross at the far post corner from six yards. It was Annis’ second goal of the weekend and the first assist of 2009 for Thompson.
“We got the ball in transition from Lauren (Hyde). The ball was kind of in the middle of the pitch and McKenzie (Barney) slid to get a ball out wide to Lindsay. I knew she was going to take it out of the corner so I tried to get in the box for the cross. Everyone else made their runs near post so I just made sure I had far post. I was unmarked and I had a really good look at goal,” Annis said. “I haven’t scored on a header in quite some time. It was such a relief when I did today.”
The Gators return home to play No. 16 LSU (10-3-3, 6-1-1 SEC) on Thursday. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
women’s golf: The women’s golf team claimed a seventh place finish at the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships at the Fox Den Country Club. The Gators finished the tournament with a team score of 902 (304-295-303, +38).
Tournament host Tennessee finished the event in first place after carding a team total of 868 (283-291-294, +4). The Lady Vols had three golfers finish in the top-10, including Nathalie Mansson, who finished in a tie for the lead after carding a 213 (71-71-71, -3). Mansson joined Louisville’s Laura Anderson who also scored a 213 (72-70-71, -3).
