The No. 1 Florida Gators visited Baton Rouge, La. to face the No. 4 LSU Tigers.
FIRST QUARTER
After Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow was medically cleared to play earlier in the day, the Gators took the field at Tiger Stadium with Tebow set to start.
The bayou fans are rockin' as expected, and the Gators will kickoff and get the ball in the second half. Trindon Holliday takes it to the Tiger 29. LSU tests the UF run defense and converts its first third down when sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson finds running back Charles Scott on a dump-off pass.
Jefferson isn't able to convert another third down after being flushed from the pocket again. Receiver Brandon LaFell can't hang on to the pass as he falls out of bounds, and LSU punts down to the UF 7-yard line.
Tebow answers one question early, as he runs an option play to his left, draws two defenders and pitches to tight end Aaron Hernandez, who runs for the first down to the UF 21. Tailback Jeff Demps picks up 25 yards on a dash up the middle that he takes to the UF sideline.
Tebow completes his first pass to Hernandez and takes a hard hit by the LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson. On third-and-inches, Emmanuel Moody picks up the first down up the middle. Moody dashes for 12 yards, eluding and dragging defenders along the way.
Tebow rolls to his left and gets bumped as he throws incomplete. The Tigers are generating pressure every time he looks to pass. Penalties on LSU give the Gators a first-and-10 on the LSU 14. Tebow carries the ball for the first time, lowers his head and pushes forward but cannot pick up any yards.
On third-and-8 Tebow can't find an open receiver, is forced to scramble and bounces his helmet hard off the turf as he is tackled. Caleb Sturgis makes a 28-yard field goal to open the scoring.
After a touchback gives LSU the ball on their 20, Florida's defense snuffs out a couple of short LSU pass completions. But Scott gashes the Gators and picks up a first down to the 39. Another big hit by the Gator D forces the Tigers to punt again.
After a short punt to the UF 35, the Tigers bottle up the Gator running backs. Tebow
hooks up with Hernandez again for 10 yards and first down to the UF 48-yard line.
First quarter: Florida 3, LSU 0
Florida — Caleb Sturgis 28-yard field goal, 3:50. 12 plays, 77 yards, 8:11 Time of Possession (T.O.P.) Key play: Jeff Demps 25-yd run to FLA 49; Fla 3, LSU 0
SECOND QUARTER
Tailback Emmanuel Moody is getting more carries, as many expected the Gators to limit the number of carries by quarterback Tim Tebow. Moody shoots up the middle for an 8-yard carry on first down.
On third-and-3, with LSU geared up for a run up the middle, the Gators do just that and are stuffed. Florida goes for it on fourth-and-2. Brandon James takes a reverse and is knocked out of bounds short of the marker. The LSU defense is showing off its tremendous closing speed.
On second-and-2, LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson runs through the line and picks up a first down. Jefferson then connects with receiver Brandon LaFell for 26 yards and another first down. LSU continues to march, as the Gators are flagged for a couple of unnecessary roughness penalties.
With powerful running back Charles Scott driving up the middle, the Tigers have a third-and-goal from the UF 2-yard line. Florida stuffs LSU, and the Tigers settle for a field goal to tie the game.
After a touchback, Tebow rolls to his right but is forced to scramble. Weaving his way through the Tiger defense, Tebow picks up 8 yards. Moody runs to the UF 32-yard line for the first down. Tebow looks off his first target and passes for 20 yards to Brandon James at the LSU 49-yard line.
Tailback Jeff Demps sweeps to his right and runs to the LSU 35. Moody then follows up with 6 yards to the 29. Tebow keeps it and drives forward for the first down with 57 seconds remaining in the half.
From the LSU 24 and with good protection, Tebow finds Riley Cooper wide open streaking down the Gator sideline. The pass floats into his waiting hands in the end zone for a touchdown.
UF opts for a squib kick and LSU appears in business for a possible field goal before time expires, but Jefferson throws a pass right to Florida cornerback Joe Haden. The Gators have an interception in 17 consecutive games.
As he comes off the field, Urban Meyer tells CBS he thinks Tebow is "hanging in there, playing as hard as he normally does." He also says the Gators played for field position in the first half and that he expects to pass more in the second half.
Second quarter: Florida 10, LSU 3
LSU — Josh Jasper 18-yard field goal, 5:16. 10 plays, 86 yards, 6:46 T.O.P. Key play: Jordan Jefferson 26-yd pass to Brandon LaFell to FLA 43; Fla 3, LSU 3
Florida — Tim Tebow 24-yard pass to Riley Cooper (Sturgis kick), 0:50. 8 plays, 80 yards, 4:26 T.O.P. Key play: Tebow 20-yd pass to Brandon James to LSU 48; Fla 10, LSU 3
THIRD QUARTER
After the kickoff is returned to the 15, LSU's defense begins to flex its muscle. The Gators are bailed out when LSU is called for another critical penalty, this one a facemask of UF quarterback Tim Tebow that results in an automatic first down.
Tebow passes to wideout Deonte Thompson for 7 yards and then carries up the middle for a gain of 2 to set up a third-and-1. Tebow keeps the ball and bursts through the line for the first down. On the next play, Tebow sees a hole and scrambles up the middle for nearly 10 yards. He lowers his head and shoulders and picks up the first down to the LSU 44.
Tebow finds tight end Aaron Hernandez over the middle for a 26-yard gain to the 18-yard line. The two connect again, this time to the 5-yard line. Tailback Jeff Demps and Tebow both try to punch it in through the middle of the LSU defense and are stifled.
On third-and-goal, Tebow goes to Hernandez again but the pass is low and incomplete. Kicker Caleb Sturgis badly misses a 25-yard field-goal attempt to the left, and the Gators come up empty.
On his own 20-yard line, LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson is sacked by defensive lineman Justin Trattou. On third-and-15, Jefferson is under attack again and sacked by middle linebacker Brandon Spikes. LSU punts out of their own end zone and Brandon James calls for a fair catch at the UF 41-yard line.
Tebow takes a step to his right and pitches to Demps, who picks up 6 yards. Tailback Emmanuel Moody bulldozes up the middle and moves the pile for the first down. From the LSU 49, Tebow throws a strike to Riley Cooper for nearly 10 yards. On second-and-inches, Tebow makes a run for it and comes up short.
Rain begins to fall, as Tebow goes up the middle and throws himself into the pile. He stretches for the first down and comes up just shy. The Gators are forced to punt. From their own 14-yard line, the Tigers turn to Charles Scott and he runs twice for a first down to the 25 and again for 5 more yards.
Two false-start penalties push the Tigers back to their 20 with a second-and-15. The crowd boos as the whistle blows again, this time for the end of the quarter.
Third quarter: Florida 10, LSU 3
FOURTH QUARTER
Continuing the trend of underwhelming offensive line play, LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson drops back and is dropped by UF defensive end Jermaine Cunningham. The Gator defense stifles a short catch and run by tailback Charles Scott, setting up another LSU punt.
The Gators have good field position again, as the punt goes out of bounds at the UF 41-yard line. Tim Tebow rolls to his left and passes to Deonte Thompson for a 4-yard gain. Tailback Jeff Demps runs up the middle for 8 yards and a first down. Demps runs up the middle again and almost breaks free but settles for 3 yards.
Demps carries up the middle again and continues to find holes, this time scampering for 14 yards to the LSU 30. Tebow surveys the field, keeps the ball and runs forward for 6 yards. Tebow pitches to tight end Aaron Hernandez, who breaks a tackle to pick up the first down to the LSU 17.
After two running plays go nowhere, Tebow can't find a suitable target and dives for 2 yards to set up a 32-yard field goal attempt. Caleb Sturgis converts to give the Gators a double-digit lead.
The announced crowd of 93,139 is the largest in the history of Tiger Stadium. Scott rushes for 7 and then Jefferson fires incomplete. On third-and-3, Spikes bottles up Scott and the Tigers go for it on fourth-and-1. Jefferson is swarmed and sacked, as the Tigers turn the ball over on downs.
Florida takes over at the Tiger 36 and begin to salt away the game on the ground. But instead of sticking to that plan, Tebow floats a wobbly pass that is intercepted by cornerback Jai Eugene at the LSU 5-yard line.
Jefferson completes three straight passes to move the Tigers to their 32-yard line. The Gators appear to be giving up the underneath routes as the clock winds down on the game. With 3:04 left and facing a third-and-9, Jefferson passes incomplete to Terrance Toliver, who cannot hold on.
On fourth down, Jefferson cannot escape Florida's fierce pass rush. The ball is stripped by Brandon Spikes and recovered by offensive lineman Lyle Hitt, who is tackled well short of the first down. The Gators take over on downs again.
Demps runs for 7 yards and follows that with a 1-yard dive. With 2:23 left, the Gators are looking to put the game away. Tebow plunges for the first down, effectively ending the game.
