Informational booths, speakers and a visit to solar facilities will be the highlights of Saturday's Solar Tour and Sustainability Expo hosted by the University of Florida chapter of the American Solar Energy Society.

The expo and speakers will begin at 9 a.m. at the Plaza of the Americas at UF. Speakers will include licensed solar contractor Barry Jacobson, Pure Energy Solar founder Wayne Irwin, Mike Amish of the Indigo Green Store and Gainesville Realtor Richard Schackow, said Jennifer Crews of the UF solar society. Each speaker will give about a half-hour talk.

Topics will include how photovoltaic systems work, sustainable materials, financing solar energy and home energy efficiency.

Also featured is a self-guided tour of various solar-related facilities around town including homes, Alachua County's array at the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and businesses such as the Indigo Green Store. The tour begins at noon and will end about 3:30, Crews said.

The expo, with booths from various businesses and organizations, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"It's going to be more tailored toward education on solar energy," Crews said. "I believe we have 12 vendors that will be talking about their own products or how they have implemented solar energy."
