Notebook: Addazio takes responsibility for Tebow hit

Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said he'll take the blame for the hit delivered by Kentucky defensive end Taylor Wyndham that resulted in a concussion for UF quarterback Tim Tebow on Saturday night.

Wyndham came off the left edge, untouched by tackle Matt Patchan and nailed Tebow, who then slammed his head against right tackle Marcus Gilbert's knee. Instead of blocking Wyndham on the outside, Patchan went inside and Tebow didn't appear to see Wyndham coming until he was hit.

Even with a wide-open lane for Wyndham, Addazio said it was the scheme that was the issue, not one of his players.

"In our deal there’s 11 guys that gotta get (their jobs) done," Addazio said of the play. "They got roles that they gotta fulfill. Different pressures come and different things happen and we executed it and unfortunately, Tim got a shot there.

"Every protection, there’s an answer and there are times you get something you’re not supposed to get."

Addazio never said exactly what went wrong on the play, but that the Gators were in a five-man protection and that the incident was a "freak" occurrence because of a timing issue, not a personnel issue. Addazio added it's his responsibility as offensive coordinator to make sure the right scheme works.

"We’ve been in this protection for five years, so I don’t think there was a reflection of any one guy, per say, like this guy here did not do his job," he said. "It’s not really the case. You had a collection of a couple of hard things that went together … and the minute that happens … then it’s got to be reflective on only one person and that’s me.

"It’s not like some guy said, 'OK, I'm not going to get my job done.'"

Thompson's health

Addazio said Monday redshirt sophomore wide receiver Deonte Thompson (hamstring) was "close" to playing against the Wildcats.

He was seen warming up before the game by running and catching a few passes, but ended up spending the game on the sideline for the second consecutive week.

With two weeks until No. 1 Florida (4-0, 2-0 SEC) plays at No. 4 LSU (4-0, 2-0 SEC), Addazio said he anticipates Thompson will play.

"I'm not the medical guy, but I think he’s doing great," Addazio said.

"From what I understand, he’s doing well."

Gilbert honored

Gilbert earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors following the Gators’ 41-7 victory over Kentucky, the league office announced Monday.

Gilbert graded out a “Champion” for the fourth-consecutive week and helped Florida to 362 yards rushing in the win, the most by Florida against an SEC opponent since 1989 (Vanderbilt).
