Reporting live from the press box at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium ...
FIRST QUARTER
It's a beautiful, cloudy day in Gainesville, Fla. The temperature at game time is 81 degrees and there are 10-mph winds out of the east/northeast with 80 percent humidity. There is a 15 percent chance of showers.
The stadium is packed with 90,621 enthusiastic fans and hundreds of cameras are flashing as the Gators prepare to run through the tunnel and start the much-anticipated 2009 season.
Charleston Southern starts out around midfield after the Gators' opening kickoff goes out of bounds. But the Bucs can't pick up a first down against the Gator defense. After a punt pins the Gators back on their own 11-yard line, the offense takes the field.
Tailback Jeff Demps gets the first handoff, and tight end Aaron Hernandez catches the first pass of the season from quarterback Tim Tebow. Demps and Hernandez are likely to be big factors in the Gator offense this season.
On third down, Tebow hits wide receiver Riley Cooper for a 68-yard reception. On the next play, Demps cruises up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown run.
After trading three-and-out possession, the Buccaneers get back on offense and gain their third first down (compared to two first downs for Florida). CSU is back at midfield but goes no farther and is forced to punt.
On the first snap, tailback Chris Rainey runs 76 yards for another Gator touchdown. Charleston Southern gets a first down on its next possession and still leads UF in first downs, 5 to 3. But the Bucs are again shut down and forced to punt.
With the clock winding down on the first quarter, Demps rips off a 41-yard run to set up the Gators on the 12-yard line.
FIRST QUARTER: FLORIDA 14, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 0
Florida - Jeff Demps 8-yard run (Jonathan Phillips kick), 11:05.
Drive: 4 plays, 89 yards, 1:26 Time of Possession (T.O.P.)
Key play: Tim Tebow 68-yard pass to Riley Cooper.
Florida - Chris Rainey 76-yard run (Phillips kick), 4:34.
Drive: 1 play, 76 yards, :13 T.O.P.
SECOND QUARTER
Demps carries the ball 11 yards for a Gator first-and-goal. Tebow blasts into the end zone for his 44th career rushing touchdown. Tebow is now tied with LSU's Dalton Hilliard for fourth place on the all-time SEC rushing touchdown list.
Florida's defense is stopping the Buccaneer running game. The Gators force another punt and take over on their own 31-yard line. Tebow throws a lateral to Brandon James out wide and completes a pass to Hernandez, putting the Gators at the 23-yard line in a flash. Demps speeds off right tackle on a sweep into the end zone.
Back on defense, UF gives up another first down through the air. The Bucs then try a long throw, but safety Major Wright leaps for an interception to give Florida the Ball at their own 26-yard line.
Tebow throws back-to-back passes to Cooper, his new favorite target. Cooper has five catches, a new career high, and more than 100 yards through the air. Left tackle Carl Johnson comes off the field with an apparent injury. Matt Patchan replaces him. Tebow hooks up with Hernandez on two receptions, and the Gators' only scholarship tight end plows through tacklers into the end zone on the second catch.
CSU's offense continues to make some headway through the air. The Bucs reach midfield with two completions and then get to the Gator 22-yard line on a wide-open halfback pass. The fans get loud and force a delay-of-game penalty. Charleston Southern can get no closer than the 21-yard line and settles for a field goal.
James takes the kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, the first kickoff return for a score in his career. It's the Gators' first kickoff return for a TD since Bo Carroll did it against LSU in 1999, a span of 123 games.
After the Gator D forces a three-and-out, backup quarterback John Brantley takes over at the UF 24-yard line. Brantley can't lead UF to a first down and CSU gets the ball back. The Bucs are back in business and looking to score after a couple of completions. Charleston Southern has a first-and-5 at the UF 18. The Bucs pick up the first down, but time runs out on the first half as a pass into the end zone falls incomplete.
SECOND QUARTER: FLORIDA 42, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 3
Florida - Tebow 1-yard run (Phillips kick), 14:22.

Key play: Tebow 19-yard pass to Hernandez on third-and-10.
Charleston Southern - John Paglia 38-yard field goal, 5:37.
Drive: 7 plays, 48 yards, 2:18 T.O.P.
Key play: Tim Jones 26-yard pass to A.J. Toscano.
Florida - James 85-yard kickoff return, 5:24.
THIRD QUARTER
Redshirt freshman T.J. Lawrence takes the kickoff back to midfield. Tailback Emmanuel Moody runs up the middle and makes a nice cut for 23 yards. Brantley hits Justin Williams on a crossing pattern in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown reception. Jonathan Phillips misses the extra point.
UF forces a punt, takes over at midfield and quickly moves down the field with Moody leading the way. Moody shows an array of jitterbug moves and has the crowd cheering "Moooo!" The offense, however, gets bogged down and Brantley cannot get the Gators into the end zone. He scrambles to the CSU 6-yard line and the Bucs take over on downs.
The Florida defense is now full of young reserve players, like defensive end Earl Okine, linebackers Jon Bostic and Jelani Jenkins and safety Dee Finley. The baby Gators force a punt and Frankie Hammond, Jr. returns it to the Gator 47-yard line.
True freshman running back Mike Gillislee gets his first carry. Brantley fakes a hand-off and shows off his wheels on a 23-yard scamper down the UF sideline to the CSU 15-yard line. Brantley caps off the drive with a 9-yard TD pass to Cade Holliday.
THIRD QUARTER: FLORIDA 55, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 3
Florida - John Brantley 7-yard pass to Justin Williams (kick failed), 12:39.
Drive: 6 plays, 49 yards, 2:21 T.O.P.
Key play: T.J. Lawrence 46-yard kickoff return.
Florida - Brantley 9-yard pass to Cade Holliday (Phillips kick), :24.
Drive: 6 plays, 53 yards, 2:44 T.O.P.
Key play: Brantley 23-yard run.
FOURTH QUARTER
A large contingent of fans has made its way to the exits, as garbage time is in full effect. Even Charleston Southern has put its backups in the game. Florida forces a punt, but CSU can only get the ball to the Gator 39.
Brantley starts the UF drive with two passes to redshirt freshman Omarius Hines. Gillislee gets going with five straight runs, the last of which is a 7-yard touchdown.
Florida's reserve defense is getting pushed off the line of scrimmage by CSU. The defensive line in particular is not stopping the run or rushing the passer. Anyone who took Florida with the 63-point spread has got to be nervous now.
The Bucs march deep into UF territory and convert a fourth down for a first-and-goal at the 10-yard line. Playing with more urgency, the Gator defense gets a better pass rush and breaks up three straight passes. Florida stuffs CSU on a fourth-down pass reception and takes over at the 9.
FOURTH QUARTER: FLORIDA 62, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 3
Florida - Mike Gillislee 7-yard run (Phillips kick), 9:33.
Drive: 8 plays, 61 yards, 2:20 T.O.P.
Key play: Brantley 13-yard pass to Omarius Hines.
