Miami, Booker T. Washington teammates Lynden Trail and Quinton Dunbar are two of the top players from south Florida and both have the Gators at the top of their lists. Trail, a defensive end, has been courted by Florida's staff for sometime and he told The Gainesville Sun that the main attraction Florida has to offer is coach Urban Meyer.
It's really that simple. He "loves" the way Meyer treats him and likes the fact that it's not all about football for Meyer. The two talk about family, life and everything else. One big plus for Trail is that Meyer likes to call him just to talk to his girlfriend to get he inside scoop on Trail. Meyer's relationship with Trail's family his huge to him.
“Urban Meyer’s a real cool-headed coach,” Trail said. “When I’m on the phone with him, he doesn’t necessarily want to talk about football all the time. No one wants to hear about the sport all the time. I love the sport, but I don’t want to hear about it 24/7 from all the schools I’m talking to. He always asks how I'm doing, how my family's doing, how my girlfriend's doing. He just wants to really know about the guy he's recruiting, not just the player."
Besides that, Trail, whom Rivals.com lists as the 10th-best defensive end, said he likes how the defensive ends at Florida are used and how fast they are. He's a very quick defensive end and still remains one of the strongest ones on Florida's board. Trail had 22 sacks and two interceptions as a junior and if he gets over a nagging hamstring injury, he said he could improve upon that this fall.
"Overall, I love how they use their defensive ends," Trail said. "(UF's staff) compared me a lot to Jevon Kearse and (Carlos) Dunlap. I'd love to try and live up to their stature, but I'm just trying to stay humble and if anything, I'd love to be at their school if it came down to it on Signing Day."
As of right now, Trail said Florida is the favorite but USC is "giving them a run for their money." He likes the dominance USC's defense has had over the years and would love to play for a program like that. He also said that distance is not a factor in his decision, so traveling across the country wouldn't be a problem. But with the way Florida's defense should play over the next few years, Trail would be seeing the same sort of dominance in Gainesville as well.
After speaking with him, there's no question that Trail is a huge Gator lean. The only thing keeping him from committing right now is that he said he wants to take a look at a few other schools and might put everything off until National Signing Day. Then again, things in the recruiting world always change ...
"Florida's just a great school," he said. "I'm not just going to lean on the fact that they won two national championships in three years because I wasn't there so it really doesn't matter to me. That's in the past."
Dunbar is a guy that has been on Florida's radar for some time, but hasn't exactly been as highly publicized as his best friend. Dunbar certainly has the ability to play at Florida — he had 39 catches for 703 yards and seven touchdowns last year. He's also got some speed and said he sees himself as more of Louis Murphy-type player because "he loves going after the deep ball." That's something that could be very intriguing to the Gator staff. Everyone wants to be a Percy Harvin or a Jeff Demps in the spread, but having a guy that will block and help you down the field is important.
Dunbar said he's been in constant contact with Florida's coaching staff over the past few months and said he feels like a nice connection has been made between he and UF's staff.
"I have a great relationship with (cornerbacks) coach (Vance) Bedford, coach Urban (Meyer) and (receivers) coach (Billy) Gonzales," said Dunbar, whom Rivals rates as the No. 17 wide receiver nationally. "I talk to any one of them almost every day. The program is great. They’ve won two national championships in the last three years. They’re headed in the right direction."
Like Trail, Dunbar said he likes the idea of joining his best friend at the next level. However, he's playing it smart and said he still wants to look around a little before making a decision. But he made it clear that if the right opportunity presented itself, he wouldn't be opposed to committing sooner than National Signing Day.
"Me and Trail have been best friends since we were younger kids and we believe that we want to go to the same college and play together," he said.
"As of now, (he plans to commit on) Signing Day. But if I feel like the school is right for me, I will have no problem committing."
Trail is one of the liveliest guys to talk to, so here's the quote of the interview from Trail on why he fits perfectly with Florida's speed: "I love the fact that I'm quicker than your average defensive end. I came up with a motto for any (offensive) tackle that thinks he can stop me: 'You can't block what you can't touch.' I'm just obsessed with being dominant, and Florida's ends are dominant and that's the reason why they're sitting at my top two right now."
