13. BOISE STATE BRONCOS
2008 record: 12-1
Returning starters offense/defense: 6/5
Strength: The passing game. Kellen Moore threw for 3,486 yards in 2008 and was one of only two freshman in the top 20 in that category. With the running game in a transitional period, look for Moore’s number to improve due to more attempts and the Broncos’ easy schedule.
Weakness: Losing three starters from a defensive line that ranked 22nd in rushing yards allowed is a big blow for 2009. The veteran secondary should be able to compensate, but a team that starts running downhill is hard to stop.
Biggest star: Sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore. Should have a breakout season if he can stay injury-free and build on an impressive freshman campaign.
Rising star: Junior running back Jeremy Avery should emerge from the shadow of Ian Johnson. His numbers as a backup to Johnson last year: 614 yards, seven touchdowns and an average of 5.5 yards per carry.
Toughest game: Not many teams can boast that the toughest game of the season is the first one, but the Broncos can. They play a premium Pac-10 team in Oregon at home on Sept. 3. If Boise State wins, it could be looking at another undefeated season.
