This is the third in a 25-part series that counts down the best football players in the SEC heading into the 2009 season.

No. 23 JAVIER ARENAS

Alabama senior cornerback

Why he's No. 23: Arenas came into the league as a return specialist but now he is one of the best dual-threat athletes in the SEC. Arenas established himself as a solid cornerback last year while continuing to lead the Tide in kick and punt returns and be one of the top returners in the nation. Arenas has made himself into a physical corner who gets few balls thrown his way.

Key number: Arenas was sixth in the nation in punt returns last year, averaging 15.9 yards a return and running three back for touchdowns.

Fun fact: Arenas, whose cousin is NBA star Gilbert Arenas, was the lone bright spot in Alabama's 31-17 Sugar Bowl loss to Utah returning a punt 73 yards for a touchdown.
