NEWBERRY — Two students were suspended from Oak View Middle School in Newberry this week for allegedly bringing a BB gun and fake marijuana to school.
Sworn complaints were filed against a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old implicated in the case.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, other students told administrators they suspected there was a gun on campus.
Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said the situation was reported to the school resource officer at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday after school officials found a BB pistol. A subsequent search turned up a substance similar in appearance to marijuana.
School Board spokeswoman Jackie Johnson said both students were immediately suspended from school.
The 13-year-old was charged with possession of an imitation drug substance. The 14-year-old was charged with possession of an imitation drug substance and with possession of a gun on school property.
