An administration official familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday the school is waiting for Bowden, 79, to sign an agreement that both sides have tentatively approved. The official requested anonymity pending the official announcement, which is expected by next week.

Bowden's 382 career coaching wins are one fewer than Penn State's Joe Paterno, the all-time leader among major college coaches. Paterno, 82, recently signed a three-year extension while Bowden has an option for 2010.

Bowden's successor, offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, is scheduled to replace him by January 2011 or be paid $5 million.
