TALLAHASSEE, Fla. State Sen. Dan Gelber will announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, becoming the second major Democrat to get in the race.

Gelber, who served is the House Democratic leader the past two years before being elected to the Senate in November, plans to make his announcement Tuesday at his Miami Beach home.

Gelber said earlier this month that he will officially enter the race soon. Asked about Tuesday's news conference, he said, "It's highly unlikely I'm going to call the media over to say I'm not running for the U.S. Senate."

An adviser confirmed Gelber will enter the 2010 race for the seat Republican Mel Martinez is giving up after one term.
