MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Big Brown has been chosen 3-year-old Male of the Year at the 38th annual Eclipse Awards.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner beat out Santa Anita Derby winner Colonel John and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Raven's Pass for the honor Monday night.

Undefeated Zenyatta, the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic winner, was selected top older female over Chilean-bred Cocoa Beach and Ginger Punch.

Proud Spell was chosen the top 3-year-old filly over Music Note and Eight Belles, who broke both front ankles moments after finishing second to Big Brown in the Derby and was euthanized.

Steve Asmussen, who worked with Dubai World Cup winner Curlin, was chosen trainer of the year over Rick Dutrow Jr. and Bobby Frankel.
