Allison Mervau scored on a free kick from 20 yards away in the 65th minute to lift P.K. Yonge past Fort White, 1-0 in Thursday night’s District 3-3A championship match.
Sarah Waters made five saves in goal for the Blue Wave, who captured their fourth consecutive district crown.
“This team has awesome chemistry. They really play collectively as a whole very well,” said P.K. Yonge coach Pauline Hazan. “From our starting 11 to our bench, I feel like we have really good depth and we’re playing very well right now.”
After a scoreless first half, Mervau scored the match’s lone goal when she lofted a direct kick from the left side to the near post that found the back of the net with 15 minutes remaining. The goal was Mervau’s 32nd of the season. P.K. Yonge (14-6-2) out-shot Fort White 27-8 on the night.
Regardless of the setback, the Indians, who hosted the district tourney, have clinched their third-straight regional-playoff berth. P.K. Yonge will host a Region 1-3A quarterfinal on Thursday, while Fort White will be on the road for the opening round.
District 2-3A: Tallahassee Florida High blanked Taylor County 2-0 to capture the district championship on Thursday night. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs will make their fourth straight regional-playoff appearance and their fifth in the last six years. Taylor County will be on the road in the first-round.
