Lake City police are investigating an apparent murder after a body was found stuffed in the trash can in the backyard of a home late Friday afternoon.
Police Lt. Joe Moody said Saturday the body has not been identified. It appeared to be that of a woman. The body was found about 5:15 p.m. by the owner of a home at 885 SW Jaguar Drive in the Cypress Landing subdivision.
"It was in one of the big trash cans behind the residence. We're treating it as a homicide," Moody said. "The owner came home and things just didn't look right. The container wasn't where it was supposed to be. He started looking around and found the body."
Police Saturday afternoon had not released the name of the homeowner who found the body. The owners listed for that address with the Columbia County property appraiser's office are Johnny and Barbara Walker. Moody said the homeowner is not a suspect in the case.
Moody said authorities had not estimated how long the person had been dead or how long it had been in the trash can prior to being found. A cause of death and identify also had not been determined.
An autopsy that could possibly answer some of the those questions was performed Saturday.
Moody would not say if the house had been broken into or if anything else appeared to be amiss in the house. The body was complete inside the trash container, which was about 4 feet deep.
"There is nothing I can tell you without impeding the investigation," Moody said.
