The Alachua Police Department arrested three teens on Wednesday and charged them with planting a hoax bomb, which is a felony.
The three 15-year-old Alachua boys are accused of putting a device resembling a bomb into a mailbox in their neighborhood on Dec. 27. Police said the residential mailbox was likely a random selection and not targeted by the boys. A family member who had gone to the mailbox to check for mail spotted the device and called police.
Other agencies were called to assist in the investigation, including the Alachua County Sheriff's Office bomb squad, which determined the device was a hoax.
Police said the three teens were turned over to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice following their arrests.
