Ocala police arrested a man early Monday who they believe shot and killed a Jacksonville man in front of his children on Wednesday.
Dexter Newson, 18, walked into the Ocala Police Department lobby around midnight Monday after hearing that investigators were looking for him, police spokeswoman Sgt. Angy Scroble said. Newson, of Ocala, was arrested at 12:20 a.m. and charged with one count of murder.
According to officials, Dorian Gaskin, 38, of Jacksonville, who was a longtime Ocala resident, was in Ocala visiting his mother's home in the 1900 block of Southwest Seventh Place and was in the yard with his children.
Newson was allegedly riding down Southwest Seventh Avenue in a car driven by Mindy Goble when Gaskin yelled at Goble to slow down. Police say Newson shot Gaskin in front of the children as Goble drove away. Gaskin was shot in the chest around 5:05 p.m. He was taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center, where he died that evening.
A neighbor later identified the vehicle, which led police to Goble.
Goble said she did not know the man she was with, but reportedly said her passenger was the shooter.
Police got a break in the case Sunday, Scroble said, after a Crime Stoppers tip identified Newson as the shooter. When Goble picked Newson out of a photograph lineup, detectives went looking for him.
They didn't have to look very long.
"He came in and said he wasn't going to answer any questions," Scroble said. "He wouldn't have come to us if we weren't looking for him."
Newson was taken to the Marion County Jail and charged with premeditated murder.
Scroble said Monday that Goble has not been charged.
