Only a month removed from being promoted to offensive coordinator at Florida, Steve Addazio has emerged as one of the top candidates for the head coaching vacancy at Boston College.
"They might request permission to talk to Steve," UF coach Urban Meyer said Sunday. "I don't know much more than that. Obviously, Steve is a great coach. They should ask permission to talk to him."
The question is when will Boston College officials be able to arrange an interview with Addazio, who is currently hospitalized in Gainesville with an infection in the knee that he had replaced about a year ago.
"It's a serious thing," Meyer said. "We'll know more about it here in the next few days."
Addazio has strong New England ties and is considered an excellent motivator and one of the strongest recruiters on Meyer's staff. He interviewed for the coaching vacancy at Syracuse last month.
According to Boston College officials, they hope to name a new coach in the next few days. Boston College defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani is considered the leading candidate for the job.
Even if Addazio remains at UF, Meyer is in the market for a new assistant. He needs to replace tight ends and assistant offensive line coach John Hevesy, who recently accepted a job at Mississippi State with former Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen.
"He joined (Mullen) and it's a promotion and a title at Mississippi State," Meyer said. "We've been together eight years. He's a great coach, a great friend, a great person, a great father and a great husband. But we'll do well hiring a coach here (to replace him)."
