Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a teenager they allege pulled a handgun on a man and took his money and cell phone Tuesday afternoon.
The 16-year-old Gainesville resident is facing a robbery with a firearm charge and was taken to the area’s Juvenile Assessment Center, said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Art Forgey.
A 20-year-old man told investigators the teen, who he recognized from the area, held a gun to his head and demanded cash and his phone. The robbery occurred at about 3:45 p.m. at 911 SW 62nd Terrace.
Forgey said deputies had a suspect in custody in less than one hour in part due to information and contacts from Deputy Kathy Zedalis as part of the agency’s community-oriented policing policy. The policy encourages more interaction between officers and residents in combating crime. Deputies are assigned to certain parts of the county, which are designated as zones.
Officers recovered the stolen money and phone and found a loaded, .45-handgun at the suspect’s home, Forgey said.
