A Gainesville couple was arrested on child neglect charges Thursday night for reportedly leaving their twin sons alone in a dirty home while they went out to a party with friends on New Year's Eve, according to the Gainesville Police Department.
Charged with two counts of child neglect were Lori Beth Kovens, 42, and Craig Alan Kovens, 39, both of 3734 NW 22nd Place, according to an arrest report.
On Thursday, the couple's 10-year-old sons awoke about 8 a.m. to find their parents gone. They had been left without food, care, instructions or a note of their parents whereabouts, according to the arrest report.
Eventually, the children went to a neighbor's home. The report states the parents left the house about 11:30 p.m. New Year's Eve to "party with friends" and did not return home until about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
Craig Kovens reportedly told police that the couple had spent the day doing cocaine and drinking.
The report states that the home was "in disarray and dirty" and a cylinder device with traces of cocaine was in plain view.
