Authorities confirmed Friday that a Newberry man shot his mother and then himself in a New Year's Eve murder-suicide.

James R. Truluck, 35, shot is mother, Nancy Calhoun, in the head in her home at 3715 SW 202nd St. and then shot himself in the head, said Alachua County Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey.

When the case was first reported, investigators would not say who shot whom.

Truluck was dead but Calhoun was alive when deputies arrived at her home about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Family members had gone to the home when Calhoun failed to go online as usual at about 7 p.m. to chat and play games.

Forgey said several family members live nearby.

Calhoun was taken to Shands at the University of Florida by helicopter and later died.
