The State Attorney's office will likely pay special attention to how an early Thursday morning burglary is resolved.
The burglary happened at the State Attorney's office.
Charles W. Hixon, 49, High Springs, was charged with burglary of a business and loitering and prowling when he was arrested by Gainesville Police at 5:25 a.m. Thursday.
Police Sgt. Steve Baker and Officers Chuck Talton and Steve Sweeting said Hixon caught their attention at about 4:30 a.m. when he appeared to be wearing a backpack while walking down side streets in the downtown area, was frequently looking over his shoulder and walked in shadows when possible.
The officers said that after Hixon apparently noticed them, he put the backpack into a trash can and then walked to the 500 block of NW 13th St. and sat down on a bench.
The officers picked the backpack up out of the trash, opened it and found a laptop computer inside. Once the laptop was turned it, the officers said they recognized the name of the person the laptop had apparently been assigned to – an assistant state attorney.
The officers also said that while they were talking to Hixon, they noticed shards of glass in his clothing. Other officers were dispatched to the state attorney's office at 120 W. University Ave. where a broken window discovered. Hixon was then arrested on suspicion of breaking the window and stealing a laptop.
