The League: Season Review
Last Modified: Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 6:27 p.m.
A crazy season of SEC football (is that redundant?) has come down to one final game which means this is the last presentation of "The League" until the conference basketball season gets cranked up. What better time for our awards?
Player of the year
There's only one player with a shot at the Heisman Trophy and that would be Florida's Tim Tebow. We all knew his numbers would be down from last year's amazing performance but he still is leading the SEC in passing efficiency and touchdown passes. And he has run for more than 500 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Runner-up: Knowshon Moreno, Georgia.
Defensive POY
Alabama's Rashad Johnson has had a tremendous season and is the glue of the Tide defense. He leads the league in passes broken up and has five interceptions. The former walk-on has been a difference-maker for Alabama.
Runner-up: Eric Berry, Tennessee.
Newcomer of the year
Everyone figured Texas transfer Jevan Snead would make Ole Miss better on offense. He helped the Rebels become an 8-4 team. Snead finished third in passing yards and second behind Tebow in TDs thrown.
Runner-up: A.J. Green, Georgia.
Coach of the year
Nick Saban was supposed to have an improved team in his second year. But 12-0? Like him or not, he's done a marvelous job this season.
Runner-up: Houston Nutt, Mississippi.
Most versatile player
Vanderbilt's D.J. Moore had six interceptions this year. And averaged 6.1 yards a rush. And caught two touchdown passes. And led the team in punt returns. And led the team in kickoff returns. 'Kay?
Runner-up: Percy Harvin, Florida.
Most disruptive player
Ole Miss defensive lineman Peria Jerry was a wrecking ball against SEC offenses this season. He accounted for 17 tackles for a loss this year, the most in the SEC.
Runner-up: Eric Norwood, South Carolina.
Most disappointing team
I know that Tennessee was so bad it ended up firing its coach, but nobody likes to be fooled and Auburn fooled us in the preseason. The Tigers were abysmal. The sad truth about the SEC this season is that there are plenty of contenders for this award.
Runner-up: LSU, no, Georgia, no, Tennessee.
Play of the year
Johnson's interception in overtime, his third of the game, that allowed Alabama to win in overtime against LSU in the Saban Bowl. The Tide scored after the pick to keep its national title hopes alive after a missed chip-shot field goal at the end of regulation.
Runner-up: Casey Dick to London Crawford on fourth-and-1 as Arkansas beat LSU.
