Dooley: Greatest roll we've ever seen

This is getting ridiculous.

Dooley Grades the Gators
OFFENSE: A
First half: The offense made enough big plays but it really wasn't an overwhelming performance. South Carolina's linebackers played really well.
Second half: How many times are we going to see this? Florida blew the doors off a good defense in the second half starting with the first play.
For the game: The Gator offense more than doubled the average yards per game South Carolina was allowing coming into the game.

DEFENSE: A+
First half: Brandon Spikes made the first big play as Florida took over the national lead in interceptions returned for touchdowns.
Second half: The defense continued to come up big and Will Hill's interception was another example of Florida's great speed.
For the game: Charlie Strong deserves a raise for the job he has done with this defense in 2008. Or maybe a head coaching job.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A
First half: James Smith not only made a huge play recovering the errant cross-field lateral but showed great discipline in not falling for it in the first place.
Second half: Kickoff coverage continued to be excellent, and Brandon James finally cut loose for a long return.
For the game: Once again, the Gators followed one part of Urban Meyer's Plan to Win by winning the kicking game.

OVERALL: A
This is getting redundant but there is not a team playing as well as Florida, and it's not even close.

You talk all week about how tough a game it's going to be and — BAM! — you look up and it's 21-0. You worry about the guy in the visor and staying focused and — BAM! — nobody's going to catch him and it's 35-3. You spend the week with a sick feeling in your stomach because you've been watching this amazing South Carolina defense and — BAM! — you've won the game by half-a-hundred.

"This game ranked No. 1 as far as the concern I had," Urban Meyer said.

Sure. You just won the East. Could have been a letdown game.

Instead, Florida emptied another stadium.

Its own.

By the time Chris Rainey scored the final touchdown of the night, a lot of people had left to get a start on the night. Because like it has been so many other times this season, it was over early.

Just ridiculous.

And delicious for Gator fans.

The ball coach from South Carolina brought the SEC's No. 1-rated defense to Gainesville. We know this because he reminded the media the Gamecocks were leading the SEC many times during the week. We didn't even have to look it up.

But is there any doubt now what team has the best defense in this defense-thick conference?

Sure, I'd rather play defense against the quarterbacks Charlie Strong faced Saturday and the Gamecocks have no running game. But the defense did more than stop South Carolina. It started the snowball rolling with two early interceptions, one for a touchdown.

And when that snowball came to a halt, it had embarrassed the man who named the building.

"We just got clobbered," Steve Spurrier said.

You watched it and wondered one thing — how did this South Carolina team win seven games?

Or maybe Florida is just this good.

"Any time you win a game against a great coach like Steve Spurrier, it's great," Florida quarterback Tim Tebow said. "I thought about it at the end of the game, to win like that is pretty sweet."

Unless you were Steve Spurrier.

He'll be rooting for the Gators the rest of the way. He even told Meyer he hoped the mighty Gators go on a four-game winning streak.

But do you treat royalty like that?

You do when you're on the greatest roll we've ever seen for a Florida team. The Gators not only handed Spurrier his worst loss ever, they became the first SEC team to win six straight games by 28 or more points.

Offense, defense, special teams. Ridiculous.

Once again it wasn't the offense that made the first big play. Instead, it was Brandon Spikes returning an interception for a touchdown. Then it was Ahmad Black getting another pick and giving Florida yet another short field. Then the botched trick play by South Carolina on the kickoff and the shortest field possible.

"It makes life easy," offensive coordinator Dan Mullen said. "You play on short fields and the offense starts to develop confidence."

BAM! BAM! BAM! And it's 21-0 and Florida has only 79 yards of offense.

By the time it was over, it was a 50-point loss for South Carolina. It made Spurrier's loss to Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl seem like a nail-biter.

"When you beat LSU and Georgia like we did," said Percy Harvin, "you believe like you can do it again."

And again and again.

Since Tebow's famous post-Mississippi speech, the Gators have been the best team in America. Whether it was Tebow's speech or — as Meyer said — the embarrassment of the way the Gators played at the end of last season, something has this team playing at a level that is, well, ridiculous.

"I didn't think it would be like this," Tebow said of the Gators' six-game run. "Our team is playing with a lot of momentum."

Eating up everything that gets in its way. Even if your name's on the wall.
