Piped in music now part of the scene
Last Modified: Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 1:25 a.m.
I hope you enjoyed the bye week as much as I did. Now say goodbye.
The bye weeks are finished, gone, kaput for Florida. The grind is ahead unless you discount The Citadel, which warmed up for its November meeting with Florida by getting hammered by Furman on Saturday.
Man, I love those bye weeks. Visited my parents, sat in my dad's sports room with three TVs and my laptop going and he was able to sit there and listen to me and my brother criticize the quality of the third television and the brand of beer dad had stocked two refrigerators with the day before. Good times.
You love Game Days and I love No-Game Days.
The only negative was that there weren't the classic upsets we usually see from a typical college football Saturday. But the weekend did leave the readers with a lot of questions. So Dr. Football came up with the answers.
Dear Dr. Football:
Sorry I don't want to talk about your picks this week; they speak for themselves. What I am upset about and down right sick of is the piped in music at Florida Field. Do we not have a band? We don't need that stuff and do not like it. We should leave it for Miami or that game that they play on Sunday. What is your opinion?
Thanks and go Gators.
John
Dear John:
Didn't notice it. But there is an SEC rule about playing music between plays, a rule Auburn violated repeatedly during its game against Florida in 2006 and was eventually fined by the league. I checked with UF and found out they began playing music during timeouts about halfway through last season.
"In this day and age there is more of an expectation level to add to the energy and excitement for the fans," said Mike Hill, Florida's associate athletic director for external affairs.
I agree with you about Miami where the music was too loud and excessive. I'll listen closer on Saturday, but what they really need to do is plug my iPod into the sound system. Then we'll be rockin'.
Pat:
Maybe it's just me ... but I found your mocking the speech Tim Tebow gave after the Gators' loss to be a rather pathetic attempt at humor ... perhaps if instead you said that you'd start a Web site called "FirePatDooley.com," you'd get a lot more laughs.
Sincerely,
Rob
Dear Rob:
Someone named Karen Meisenheimer started that site already. Hey, wait, that's my wife's maiden name.
Pat:
Check out the computer rankings for the first BCS poll today. I just checked the individual sites and the ones listed appear to be unfavorable to the Gators. The Peter Wolfe rankings have Ball State 10th and Florida 20th. The part of the Sagarin ratings the BCS uses are also curious. I understand they throw out the highest and lowest, however, that Mississippi loss really hurt the Gators with the computers. It may not mean much now, but you might consider an article in the near future as to how in the world they come up with those ratings.
Thanks,
Frank
Frank:
A whole article on how stupid the BCS is for using computer programmers as a main component in the standings? Too easy.
You know who is really steamed? Pete Carroll because Ohio State is five spots higher than USC in the computer rankings. Ohio State, which lost 35-3 to USC?
"How does that happen?" asked Carroll. "Nice system."
As far as Florida goes, look at it this way. If Florida wins out, the computer rankings will soar because the Gators will have beaten Georgia and likely Alabama. Plus, that knocks two teams out who are ahead of UF. And the rest of the teams ahead of Florida play at least one of the other teams ahead of Florida.
So don't worry too much about the flawed system. Worry about Kentucky.
Dr. Football:
I hate 12:30 games and here we go again. There is no time to tailgate before the game and it doesn't have the same atmosphere. LSU doesn't like playing them and guess what? They don't play them. Isn't there a rule about this?
Thanks,
Craig
Craig:
By the way, love your list.
There is a rule that Raycom can ask a school only three times in a year to play a home game at 12:30. This is Florida's third so if Raycom wants another UF game on TV it will be up to the school. There is also a requirement that each school plays one Raycom game a year if it is asked.
I, of course, love the 12:30 games because that puts me on my couch Saturday night for Ohio State-Penn State and Alabama-Tennessee. You should look at it this way — exposure on Raycom is better than pay-per-view.
Dear Dr.:
Florida is honoring George Edmondson, the 86-year-old Mr. Two Bits, before the game because he is retiring after this season. Didn't he already retire once?
Confused
Confused:
Yep, in 1998, but they keep rolling him out there for pregame. The Citadel will be his last game and because that is also Senior Day the school has decided to have a nice tribute to the man Saturday starting around 12:10 p.m. so get in your seats early. They are asking fans to wear orange and also find a word to rhyme with it.
