Gustav's projected path includes the center of the Gulf of Mexico oil producing and U.S. oil refining industries. Hitting those areas will increase gas prices this week, according to Randy Bly, director of community relations, AAA Auto Club South.
In the auto club's weekly news release, Bly noted that the U.S. Department of Energy has told analysts "there is ample inventory of crude oil and gasoline." However, many oil platforms have already been evacuated ahead of Gustav and some companies have shut down refineries along thje Gulf Coast as a precaution.
"For now we can expect the forecast to diminish travel plans for some and it remains to be seen how the weather will impact the fuel supply," Bly said.
