It's almost here but you still have to get through most of August until football season finally arrives. So we're giving you a daily football fix leading right up to the first games on Aug. 28. Sun sports writers Pat Dooley and Robbie Andreu will provide lists, trivia, Swampcasts and essays to get you through the rest of the summer.

Today, Dooley is talking helmets.

ESPN does a lot of great things but it is also the Worldwide Leader in lame ideas. Like letting fans of College Football Live vote on which helmets are the best.

Eliminating Florida from the mix to avoid any semblance of homerism, my favorites are Georgia, Clemson, Texas, Cal, Arizona and Duke. But today I give you my least favorite.

1. Arizona State: The mascot looks like a cartoon on the side of a bleak helmet.

2. Oregon State: Redundant. It says Beavers and then there is a beaver who looks like he's really angry.

3. Southern Miss: Really looks a lot like a Div. 1-AA lid.

4. Washington State: Is that a Cougar or the Pink Panther coming out of the weird S?

5. Vanderbilt: Bland. Boring. Like the football program.

6. Iowa State: There have been 10 changes to the helmet since 1966. Know why? They can't get it right. The latest change bumped Cy, the mascot, off the helmet. Come on. A cardinal fighting its way out of a cyclone was so bad it was good.
