Five cars on a CSX train traveling on a western Alachua County line derailed early Tuesday, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office reported.

No one was injured, and no cars overturned in the derailment, according to both the Sheriff’s Office and CSX Transportation. The accident occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. in Newberry about 100 yards west of NW 252nd Street and south of NW 253rd Street and 5th Avenue.

Three of the cars were hauling sand and coal. Only a small amount of sand spilled, CSX spokesman Gary Sease said.

Deputies were told at the scene the derailment might have been caused by “wide gauge” where the track is set farther apart than the train’s wheels. But Sease said the cause of the derailment remained under investigation late Tuesday.

The train runs from Baldwin to Alachua County, making multiple stops along the way, Sease said.

The tracks where the accident occurred are overseen by the Florida Northern Railroad, Sease said.

Last month, a train hauling coal derailed in Alachua. CSX oversees both the tracks and the train involved in that accident, which still is under investigation, Sease said.
