Today, Dooley looks at which of Florida's national championship teams would win if the two teams played.
It hit me like a sack of bricks while sitting in a Ruby Tuesday's in Hoover, Ala. I was sitting there eating dinner while watching the Florida-Tennessee game from 2006 on the tube.
Maybe it's just because I've never thought about it before. Maybe it's something you have to get away from it for a year to put it into perspective.
But what hit me was this — the 1996 team would kill the 2006 team.
Both won national championships with senior quarterbacks and one loss. Both dominated the opponent in the title game. The '96 team won by 32, the '06 team by 27. Each won had to battle in the SEC title game before winning by double digits. Both teams had incredible chemistry.
So there are plenty of similarities between the two teams. But I think the '96 would win by at least two touchdowns.
Here's why — as good as the '06 defense was, the '96 offense would find ways to score. This was Florida offensive football at its peak. Steve Spurrier was at the top of his game. You could double Ike Hilliard and Reidel Anthony. So who's covering Jacquez Green? And '96 could throw in Terry Jackson and Fred Taylor running the ball.
The '06 team would not be able to score with the '96 team. Blowout.
It doesn't take anything away from what Urban Meyer and his team accomplished in Glendale.
And there is one advantage the '06 team would have over the '96 team if they played a game today. The '06 players would be 10 years younger.
