A Welaka man died and his passenger was seriously injured in a single car accident Monday. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The crash happened at 3:34 p.m. on U.S. 17 about a third of a mile north of Sisco Dirt Road in Putnam County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2006 Ford Mustang was headed south on U.S. 17. The driver apparently lost control on the wet road and when the car went off the paved highway, it hit two trees before coming to a stop.

The driver was identified as Brandon Barker, 23, who was taken to Shands Hospital in Jacksonville where he was pronounced dead.

Barker's passenger, Sean Rogers, 22, also of Welaka, was taken to Putnam Community Hospital in serious condition.
