The Gainesville Sun

Year: Junior

Position: Shot put and discus

Number: 58

Height: 5-foot-8

Athlete you admire most: Shawneise Williams (hammer throw and weight throw) of the University of Florida track and field team. She has made vast improvements from when she graduated high school to now.

Biggest strength/weakness you have in your sport: Strength: My determination, my killer instinct and my physical strength; Weakness: My consistency when I throw both the shot put and the discus. I am also too hard on myself.

College choices: I have received interest for track and field from several schools including Florida, Tennessee, LSU, Miami and Harvard.

Dream job: To become a pediatrician or an orthopedic doctor.

E-mail, text or phone call: Phone call.

Favorite pro and college teams: College: Tennessee Volunteers (women’s basketball and track and field teams), Florida Gators (track and field team) and Rutgers Scarlet Knights (women’s basketball team).

Goal this season: To win the Class 4A state title in the shot put and the discus.

Hardest practice drill: When I have to throw a 12-inch pvc plastic pipe filled with sand. I have to throw it like a discus and then repeat the process about eight times.

Idol(s): My great grandmother Climentine Hunt and mother Sylvia Hunt. They are both strong and very dedicated women and they have been very supportive of me. My mom, who I consider my number-one best friend, ran track at UF and I get my killer instinct from her.

Juice, milk or coffee in the morning: Milk.

Kind of shoes you wear: Flip-flops and for track I wear Nike rotational shoes.

Last time you laughed out loud: I laugh out loud many times during each day at various things.

Movie you love: “Honey” and “ATL.”

Nickname(s): I have a lot of nicknames, but most people call me Mena.

Off-field hobby: I have such a busy schedule with basketball and track and field that my time for hobbies is limited. But I do like to hang out with my friends when I get a chance to.

Pre-meet ritual: I pray before every meet and stay focused.

Quirky habit: During practice if I am talking to someone while I am holding my discus or my shot put, I tend to drop it several times during the conversation.

Rival you want to beat most: For the shot put and the discus I want to beat Zakeya Stinson of Miami Southridge. (I finished second behind her in the shot put at last year’s Class 4A state meet.) For basketball it is Orlando Freedom (Buchholz lost to Freedom in the regional final this past season).

Song you sing in the shower that could go to No. 1 on the charts: I can’t remember the last time I sung in the shower.

Television show you can't miss: “America’s Next Top Model” and “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.”

Useless fact about you: I am allergic to fake jewelry (it causes her to break out).

Vocal teammate: Myself.

Worst loss: My freshman year when I qualified for the Class 4A state meet and I scratched on all three of my throws for the discus.

X-rays: My right knee and my right foot.

Your best friend: Allison Williams, Tabitha Makopondo and Christian Harding.

Zany thing your coach once said: Whenever anyone on the girls basketball team would miss a free throw or a lay up or make any mistake, former Buchholz coach Brian Harris would yell, “Are you kidding me?”
