A Jonesville man died overnight following a single-vehicle crash on Newberry Road in Alachua County early Monday, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Killed was Willard Frederick Sandeen Deitz, 31, according to troopers. The driver was ejected from the car after it hit a brick wall and "separated into several pieces."

"It just blew apart," said Capt. Coby Fincher, commander of the Gainesville district of FHP's Troop B.

The wreck occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on Newberry Road, west of NW 122nd Street. Troopers reported Deitz had been traveling west at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the Nissan 350Z on the wet roadway. The car traveled off the north shoulder and hit a brick wall.

The vehicle's speed had not been calculated Monday morning, but Cpl. Lena Ward, who is investigating the wreck, reported it was "excessive."

The posted speed limit in the area is 50 mph, FHP said.

Ward said she did not know where Deitz was coming from or headed, although he was traveling in the direction of his home.

Deitz was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash.

He was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
