One did it with ease, three did it in perhaps the most exciting manner possible. And now, Gainesville High School, Taylor County, Oak Hall and Keystone Heights find themselves in the FHSAA's soccer regional semifinals.
The Hurricanes advanced with a 5-1 victory against visiting Bartram Trail, avenging the season-ending loss the GHS girls suffered to the same school two days earlier. Gainesville will visit Fleming Island in next Tuesday's 5A, Region 1 semifinal.
Taylor County beat visiting Walton 1-0 (4-2 penalty kicks) and will play the winner of Saturday's 1 p.m. Marianna-Pensacola Catholic game next Tuesday in 3A, Region 1.
The Eagles topped St. Johns Country Day, also 1-0 (4-2 penalty kicks) to advance in 2A, Region 1.
And the Indians got the game-winning goal from Ryan Hannah in the 79th minute to beat visiting Umatilla, 3-2. They'll host Pierson Taylor in the 3A, Region 2 semifinals.
The hopes St. Francis (19-6-2) had for a 20-win season ended with a 3-0 loss at Providence, which will host Oak Hall in the 2A, Region 1 semifinal. And in 4A, Region 2 Santa Fe (13-7-1) was beaten 3-1 at Stanton.
Class 3A, Region 1 was unkind to two locals, as host P.K. Yonge (9-6-1) was defeated 1-0 by visiting Episcopal and Fort White (6-15-3) lost 5-0 at Bolles.
