WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A man was sentenced Thursday to 10 years probation after pleading guilty to manslaughter for the death of his 14-month-old daughter after leaving the girl in a car in 2006.
Dale Lopez, 25, who has other children, was also ordered to attend an eight-week parenting class and serve 100 hours of community service under terms of a plea agreement for the death of Seanna Lopez.
"This has been a tragedy for the whole family. It would have been too difficult to go through a trial," his attorney Chris Haddad told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel for Friday's edition. "There's nothing anyone can do to punish him further. He has to live with this horror."
Lopez said he forgot to take Seanna out of the car when he returned home from running errands, according to sheriff officials. He found his daughter about an hour later on the floor of the car. Lopez told investigators that he got distracted with his other children.
The child was taken to JFK Medical Center in Atlantis where she was pronounced dead.
