A Gainesville man died after two semis collided on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County early Tuesday, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
Jeremy Garvin, 35, was killed in a fiery, two-vehicle crash that occurred at about 2:45 a.m., troopers said.
One southbound lane of the interstate remained closed at 7:30 a.m. as crews inspected the roadway and continued to clean debris from the wreck.
Garvin had been traveling south on the interstate about a quarter of a mile north of U.S. 1 when another semi pulled out in front of him from the road's emergency lane, according to troopers.
The second semi had stopped in the emergency lane so two people inside could switch drivers, FHP reported. Brian Burroughs, 26, of Adel, Ga., was trying to get back on the road when he drove into the path of Garvin's approaching semi.
Garvin's semi struck the rear of the other vehicle. Flames engulfed the front of Garvin's vehicle and the trailer of the other semi, troopers reported.
Garvin died on the scene, according to officers. Burroughs and the other man riding with him, Jerell Johnson, 23, of Adel, Ga., were not injured.
All of the vehicles' occupants had been wearing seat belts, troopers reported.
