A vehicle crashed into a power pole on W. University Avenue, shutting down

the road Monday afternoon.

Ongoing repair work at the site is expected to keep the roadway closed in

both east and west directions until about 7 p.m., said Gainesville Police

spokesman Lt. Keith Kameg.

The road has been closed from NW 21st Street to NW 34th Street.

Traffic is being routed onto SW 2nd Avenue, according to police, and

motorists should avoid the area if possible.

Damage to the pole also shut down power to about 600 customers,

Gainesville Regional Utilities reported. Power will not be restored until

repairs are completed.

One man was injured when the vehicle he was in slammed into a pole at 3026

W. University Ave. at about 11:30 a.m., said Gainesville Fire Rescue

spokeswoman Laura Koppel. Rescuers were able to free the man by cutting out

seats and pulling him out through the back of the vehicle. The man's

injuries did not appear life-threatening, she said.
