Sudye Cauthen to sign at Goerings Book Store

Sudye Cauthen will read from and sign her book "Southern Comforts" (University of Georgia Press; $29.95) at 2 p.m. today at Goerings Book Store, 1717 NW 1st Ave.

In the book, Cauthen, a fifth-generation Floridian, blends memoir, oral history and cultural geography to explore the tensions between community and environment in America today and her hometown of Alachua.

Cauthen, who is the founder of the North Florida Center for Documentary Studies and lives near White Springs, also will be visiting branches of the Alachua County Library District throughout the spring. Upcoming dates include: 2 p.m. Jan. 26, Headquarters Library; 7 p.m. Feb. 5, Tower Road Branch Library; 2 p.m. March 15, Hawthorne Branch Library; and 2 p.m. April 13, Micanopy Branch Library.

Sergeant to sign police procedural

Art Adkins will sign his first novel "The Oasis Project" (Dorrance Publishing; $23.95) at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Goerings Book Store, 1717, NW 1st Ave.

In "The Oasis Project," Shirley Waterbury does not believe her family's death off the coast of Cedar Key was accidental. She knows they were murdered, but no one will investigate the tragedy until veteran officer Slade Lockwood reluctantly agrees to take the case. He must journey across America to find himself and the killer.

Adkins has been in law enforcement for more than 27 years and is currently a sergeant with the Gainesville Police Department.

Future book signings also are scheduled for 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Friends of the Library in Cedar Key, 6:30 p.m. March 25 at the Millhopper Branch Library and 2 p.m. April 12 at the Hawthorne Branch Library.

Gainesville Firefighter Calendar now available

Local firefighters will be on hand for a calendar signing of the 2008 Gainesville Firefighter Calendar on Jan. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Swamp restaurant, 1642 W. University Ave.

The calendar is now on sale for a minimum donation of $15. Proceeds from the calendar benefit Camp Amigo, a summer camp for children burn survivors.

Firefighters featured in this year's calendar include, Mike Cowart, Bubba Ennis - who is also featured on the calendar's cover - Eric Williams, Nick Gonzalez, Wes McQueen, Pat Healey, Sean Campbell, Todd Willoughby, Josh Roberts, Dallas Baker, Alexis Dabroski, Scott Dillon and Drew Halvorson.

In addition to the signing, the calendars are available by calling 538-2657 or at Creations Hairstyling and Nail Spa in Thornebrook Village.
