An inmate at the Alachua County jail was found hanging from the bars of his

cell window by a bedsheet in an apparent suicide attempt Friday afternoon,

and officials were unable to revive him, according to the Alachua County

Sheriff's Office.

Shawn Carter, 19, was found hanging by the neck around 12:34 p.m. Friday,

about an hour after jail staff had retrieved his lunch tray from the cell

and found nothing out of the ordinary.

"He had had issues in the past," said Sgt. Keith Faulk with the Sheriff's

Office. "He had been seen by prison health services for his mental health,

but he was not on a suicide watch."

Carter was placed in disciplinary confinement for getting into a fight on

New Year's Eve, and so he was alone in a two-person cell when he was found

hanged, Faulk said.

When Carter was discovered Friday afternoon, Faulk said officials found he

still had a pulse. Prison health services, along with Gainesville Fire

Rescue and Alachua County Fire Rescue, arrived to assist in reviving him,

but after he was transported to Shands at AGH, he was pronounced dead at

1:37 p.m.

"All indications are that it was a suicide," Faulk said.

Carter was booked into the Alachua County jail on Dec. 10 after authorities

say he violated probation while living under jail supervision in Lake City.

Faulk said Carter was initially arrested for burglary and larceny, but then

he got into a fight with another inmate in Lake City and was jailed again

for violating his probation terms.

An investigation is under way.
