A man from Maryland was killed and another passenger seriously injured when the driver of a Ford Escort fell asleep on Interstate 10 near Live Oak in Suwannee County.
The crash occurred at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, when Carlos Wilkins, of Washington, D.C., fell asleep while driving west on I-10.
The driver-side passenger, Cornell Wedge, told troopers that he tried to wake Wilkins, and that is when the car spun out of control and overturned striking two pine trees.
The driver sustained minor injuries, while Wedge was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The third occupant Antonic C. Gordon, of Bowie, Md., died at the scene. The highway patrol didn't have the ages of anyone involved, but said Gordon was a young adult who had been sleeping in the back seat without wearing a seat belt.
