Two men shot while driving down road

Two Gainesville men were shot Sunday morning just as the bars were closing near the 1200 block of W. University Avenue.

Corey T. Smith, 28 and Justin E. Glass, 19, were sitting in a car stopped in west-bound traffic near the intersection of W. University Avenue and NW 13th Street.

Smith, a passenger in the car, was shot in the head at 2:20 a.m. and is in serious but guarded condition, Gainesville Police Sgt. Barry Kays said.

The driver, Justin E. Glass, 19, was shot in the arm, Kays said.

They drove themselves to the hospital.

Kays said a man walked up to the victims' car and fired several shots from a hand gun. The shooter then fled. The victims said they didn't know who the shooter was.

"We know there were probably hundreds of people around this shooting," Gainesville Police Lt. Keith Kameg said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Patty Nixon at 352-334-2483.

"Officers saw people running from the scene. We need them to come forward with information," Kameg said.

There is no description of the shooter at this time.

TAMPA - A 16-year-old boy is in serious condition after falling 20 to 30 feet while kitesurfing on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Police say a gust of wind pulled Christopher Bryan Kenny from the water and into power lines.

The Clearwater boy was conscious but disoriented after Saturday's fall. He is being treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.
