This weekend promises to be an action-packed one for several of the University of Florida's Rec Sports club teams.
UF's equestrian team will be kicking up dust at the UF Equestrian Team Western IHSA Horse Show on Saturday. On Sunday, members will compete in the Western Regional Competition.
Riders will start at 9 a.m. both mornings, and the tournaments are slated to last until the early evening.
The event will take place at the Horse Teaching Unit on Rocky Point Road (also known as SW 34th Street), two miles south of Williston Road.
In its second tournament of the semester - the sixth of the school year - the UF team comes in leading the region by 34 points.
This weekend it will face other southeast region teams, including Georgia Southern University, University of Miami, Wesleyan University, Emory University and Georgia Tech.
Half of the 30-member team will ride this weekend in the Western Regional Competition.
Even though there are no set "team practices" during the week, the riders often practice multiple times a week, said club president Johanna Hanson.
"We should do a good job against the competition based on our performance this year," Hanson said.
Closer to campus, the women's lacrosse team plays host to its first match this weekend.
The women will square off against Florida State University at 2 p.m. Saturday at the University Village South Field, next to the Southwest Recreation Center on Hull Road.
After gearing up during January with multiple exhibition matches, the women are ready to finally play their first match of the season.
The team of 35 practices three times a week for two hours.
Women's lacrosse has won the conference championship the past four years and has qualified for the national tournament in as many years.
"FSU has not beaten us once," team president Nicole Fowler said. "Not to my knowledge -at least not in the past four or five years."
And the UF women's rugby team takes on FSU at noon at the Southwest Field behind the practice soccer field on Museum Road.
The women competed against Georgia Southern University and the University of Georgia last week in Georgia.
The team is composed of 34 undergraduate players and 15 recent alumnae and graduate students, according to the team Web site. They practice three times a week for two hours, in addition to conditioning.
The last time the women's team won the championship was in 2004.
