Butler Enterprises plans to apply for an expansion of Butler Plaza that would nearly double the 1.2-million square feet of retail at the Archer Road shopping center, Gainesville developer Clark Butler told The Sun in an exclusive interview Wednesday afternoon.

The company has taken the preliminary steps necessary to build a "development of regional impact," a project of such a scale that it requires state approval, Butler said. The project would include stores, hotels, offices and possibly medical facilities on about 145 acres north of the existing Butler Plaza, he said.

Plans for Butler North have been in the works for almost a decade and during that time Butler has said the development would require state approval. However, the company has never filed for such approval.
