The Holiday Inn University Center has temporarily changed its name to University Hotel for a couple months until a restaurant opens.

A canvas sign bearing the new name covers the main sign at the hotel at 1250 W. University Ave.

General manager Karl Kaufmann said Holiday Inn had granted a waiver for the hotel to operate under its name without a restaurant but that waiver is no longer in effect. Denny's left the hotel about 18 months ago. Holiday Inn requires its restaurants to serve specific breakfast items and meet room-service standards, Kaufmann said.

Lucky Dill Deli, based in the Tampa area, will serve as the hotel's new restaurant and will move into the former Enterprise car rental location. Hotel officials previously said a coffee shop would go in the front section, but Kaufmann said that is yet to be determined.

The restaurant may be ready by March, said Larry Collier of HI Development Corp., which manages the hotel.

Kaufmann said Lucky Dill is an upscale deli that fits with the renovated lobby decor.
