Watch our county taxes

Let's keep a close eye on our county commissioners to see if they plan to provide real property tax cuts, of if this is just a political shell game (Sun 1/17), shifting how they tax us from one source to another.
Students and others paying no property taxes should shoulder more responsibility through gas taxes. But given the sorry history of the commission, raising taxes and creating new ones (the disastrous CHOICES and the failed stormwater tax), most taxpayers have very little confidence in them.
I frankly believe commissioners Mike Byerly and Lee Pinkoson understand Alachua County has the highest property tax rates in Florida and would like to address it. Commissioners Paula DeLaney, Cynthia Chestnut and Rodney Long are tax and spend specialists.
Write them, call them, tell them you want to see a real reduction in the property tax rate. And let's not stop there. Do the same with your state representatives and senator. Gov. Charlie Crist has pledged to deal with property taxes as well, doubling the homestead exemption and allowing portability, so homeowners do not lose the benefit of the Save Our Homes amendment when we sell and purchase another home in the state.

Joe DeChristofaro,
