Portion control, not wallet control
The latest item in 100-calorie packaging is three kinds of 100-calorie chocolate bars from Hershey: wafer bars, pretzel bars and dark chocolate bars.
You must know by now that having whatever it is individually wrapped, in a box, sounding healthful, means it will cost lots more.
That's right: A 5-ounce Hershey's Special Dark bar (with the same breakdown of calories, fat, saturated fat and sugar per 100 grams as the new dark chocolate 100-calorie bars) was $1.79 at one supermarket - 36 cents an ounce. The box of seven individually wrapped 17-gram 100-calorie dark-chocolate bars (4.41 ounces total) was $2.78 - 63 cents an ounce. That's 75 percent more per ounce!
A chic food mill
It's so retro, but so chic.
Oxo International's new food mill looks good in stainless steel and white enamel and is easy to use. The mill has a more-than-2-quart capacity, foldable legs to prop it over pots and bowls and a spring-loaded lever that makes it simple to change the three disks (fine, medium or coarse). Just arrived at Williams-Sonoma cookware stores and priced about $50, the food mill should be more widely available in the future.
For mashed potatoes, creamy sauces, vegetable soups and purees, crank away.
Well, isn't this Special?
If you have managed to make it through the past few years still thinking that if a Kellogg's product is called "Special K," it is similar to original Special K cereal in content or nutritional enhancement, you have been wrong every time. The latest "Special K" product should demolish that notion, establishing once and for all that "Special K" is just a brand name:
It's water! Kellogg's Special K20 "protein water." The 16-ounce bottle provides 5 grams of protein and 10 percent of daily calcium (from milk products whey protein isolate and calcium lactate) - as well as 8 grams of sugar, two artificial sweeteners and 30 milligrams of sodium. Unlike the long list of vitamins and minerals that an ounce of Special K cereal provides in quantities from 35 to 100 percent of the daily value, the bottle of Special K20 contains no other nutrients.
At one discount supermarket, a four-pack (lemon twist, strawberry-kiwi or tropical blend) was $5.99.
