The Gainesville Police Department is hosting a crime and safety forum this evening from 5 to 7 at the United Church of Gainesville, at 1624 NW 5th Ave.
The goal of the forum is to talk about crime prevention and deterrence and to provide information about some recent problems near the University of Florida campus, which include the rapes of more than one student and several burglaries.
"We've seen an increase in crime in the city and particularly in the College Park area," said Officer Shannon Wallace-Giles, who is in charge of the program.
The forum will include a crime prevention and a personal safety program. Sgt. Ray Barber and Cpl. Mike Douglas, detectives with the Police Department, will discuss recent crime in the area, and Lt. Corey Dahlem from operations bureau will discuss what is being done to combat the crime.
The forum will end with an assessment of the area.
"Law enforcement will walk the neighborhood to see exactly what the lighting situation is and get some input from residents of what issues are," Wallace-Giles said.
Officers plan to speak with landords to clean up bushes and see what can be done to make the area safer.
For more information, contact Wallace-Giles at (352) 334-2479.
