Apply now for school zoning exceptions

Parents will have a month-long window of opportunity to apply for school choice in Alachua County.
From Thursday-Feb. 16, parents can request that their child attend a school different than the one he or she is zoned during the new school year, which begins in fall 2007.
Transportation will not be provided, and students may be removed from the school as a result of tardiness or disciplinary problems.
If there are more applications for a particular school than there are spaces available, admission to the school will be granted on a lottery basis.
Additional weight will be given to applications from students whose socioeconomic status would enhance diversity at the school, students with siblings at the school and students who have previously attended the school.
Applications can be downloaded from the district's Web site at www.sbac.edu. Parents also can call (352) 955-7700 to have an application mailed to them.
Completed applications must be returned to the district office or postmarked by Feb. 16. They can be mailed to: Alachua County Public Schools
Zoning Office, 620 E. University Ave., Gainesville, FL 32601.
Parents will be notified by letter beginning Feb. 20 if their application has been approved or denied.
They must then notify the district by March 9 of their intent to accept or decline the choice.
Parents whose applications are not approved still can apply for a zoning exception after Feb. 16. For more information, call (352) 955-7700.
