The University of Florida's Student Government meeting Tuesday night was canceled because of the Gators' national championship win and a men's basketball game on Tuesday night.
With those two sporting events plus the added stress of a new semester, it was in the interest of the senators that the first meeting was delayed for a week, Senate President Josh Weiss said.
The Senate wasn't set to discuss anything requiring immediate attention at the meeting, he said.
So postponing the first meeting a week seemed like a good solution.
But Student Government leaders were busy Monday handing out orange and blue plastic bracelets and then T-shirts at the O'Connell Center before the game.
Student Government chipped in to help pay for both.
"There wasn't exactly a budget set aside for the Gators playing in a national championship," Student Body Treasurer Ryan Moseley said.
However, Student Government managed to "scrape" together more than $10,000 from various areas to help fund the T-shirts and bracelets.
When Senate meetings resume next Tuesday night, the committee chairs will present reports on their goals for the coming semester.
The Senate will also vote on a resolution congratulating the Gators football team on its championship victory.
