LAKE WORTH — A 7-year-old girl, shot in the face by her older brother Wednesday, was alert and talking after two bullet fragments fell out of her head en route to the hospital, authorities said.
"The bullet is out. She's going to be OK. It's absolutely amazing. She's up, talking and alert," Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.
She said the siblings, who live with their father and grandparents, had been playing at home all day. The grandfather, who has a medical condition and cannot speak, was supervising them.
The boy was looking for money in his father's drawer and found the gun. After shooting his sister, he ran outside and asked a neighbor for help, Barbera said.
Authorities and the Department of Children & Families were investigating the shooting.
Authorities did not immediately disclose further details about the shooting.
The Associated Press will not identify the boy because of his age.
