FORT LAUDERDALE — Three people were killed and at least eight others injured when three cars collided about two hours after South Floridians rang in the New Year, police said.
A man and a woman were killed instantly in the 2 a.m. collision at the end of an Interstate 95 exit ramp near downtown Fort Lauderdale. Police are withholding their names until they can identify the man.
A third person, 21-year-old David McKay of Fort Lauderdale, died at the hospital a few hours after the crash.
Eight crash survivors were treated at a local hospital and released, said Jill Hirsch, a Fort Lauderdale police traffic homicide investigator.
Hirsch is still trying to piece together details of the crash. She said McKay's 1971 Chevrolet collided with a 1999 Mercury and 2006 Suzuki coming off the highway.
Both people in the Mercury died at the scene.
