A misguided story

Although The Gainesville Sun has always been very supportive of animal adoption and rescue, it's unfortunate that it saw fit to profile irresponsible dog breeding in such a light-hearted way as in "Mating Games" in the Dec. 24 Since You Asked column.
Had the owners of these two dogs asked a veterinarian, they would have been told that any dog can and will breed with a dog of any other breed. Dogs have few limits to breeding, and it is the owners' responsibility to prevent such activity.
I'm sure the puppies that resulted from a cross-breeding of a rottweiler and a dachshund are cute and unique. Our animal shelter is full of cute and unique dogs who are doomed to die because their previous owners didn't believe or didn't care that puppies are always the result when unneutered and unspayed dogs are together.
These pups will probably all get homes because of the publicity from this article. Most other accidental offspring won't be so lucky.
